Book Sandwich Café

Book Sandwich 1
Succulent Lobster Sandwich
Duck Chop

Nestled along the heritage buildings along Beach Street unveils the hidden gem to Penang's already abundant café - Book Sandwich! And yes, judging from the name, the theme or renovation of the café revolves around books, something which is never-before-seen in Penang. All your senses will be fully mesmerized from the moment you step in to the café until you left it. Though Penang is not lack of café, but this one is definitely worth going.

Food  4/5
Thumbs up! Frankly speaking, I find most of the cafés here in Penang does not really have something unique that distinguish them from the others. Perhaps I was pampered by cafés in KL. Anyway, we ordered Lobster Sandwich and Duck Chop which is quite a decent portion for two of us.

Price 3/5
Personally, the price is slightly higher compared to other café you can find in Penang. However, the price is definitely justified by the quality of the food offered.

Atmosphere 4.5/5
The interior of Book Sandwich café resemble a mix of medieval European and modern days design. It was brimming with old books, artsy paintings and things you would find in an antique store. The interior is perfected by wood laden tables and chairs, under the dim light setting, gives rise to an antiquate chamber-like feel. Moreover, the whole dining experience was enhanced by a good selection of oldies. The entire setting is a good spot to spend your afternoon reading your favourite book and getting away from the internet whilst enjoying a cup of coffee.

Location 3.5/5
If you drive straight along Beach Street, Book Sandwich café is right on your right side. Located within the heart of Georgetown Heritage site and within walking distance to several mural sites, Book Sandwich will surely be another good hangout place for both locals and tourists visiting the Georgetown area. As strategic as it might seem though, the only drawback is the parking spots availability. Try to visit them during non-peak hours to have the best luck.

You can find Book Sandwich Café at Beach Street, Georgetown if you would like to visit. I can assure you that you won't regret.

6 things I learned during my internship

11 Oct 2015

Working in a company that is so tight-knit and fast paced has definitely made me learnt and grown in a short period of time. The culture is such fast paced that people actually run with 5 inches heels in office because time is of the essence! Throughout the period, I constantly reflect on what I've learned, I got to say I'm glad to see how much I've grown. So, I decided to share my personal development here, hope it's beneficial to others as well.  Here are a few things that I've learned:

1. Independence
This is one huge leap for me. I never leave home, my university was just right on town, so I never had to leave for college. This was my first time leaving home and it was likely the first time that I was away from family and friends for an extended period. It turned out to be the best time for me to be independent. During the six months, I no longer have my mom to wake me up for work or prompt me to do house chores. I also don't have breakfast prepared when I wake up nor dinner prepared after work. All the things that once I have my mom prepared for me have to be done all by myself. It was indeed a big change that carries with a big responsibility

2. Go for the extra mile
Being a junior, don't be afraid of doing extra work or tasks that are beyond your job scope. Not just for the sake of demonstrating your ability that you can do more but you will also learn something new from it. Be proactive, take the initiative to volunteer yourself to carry out projects and don't be afraid to bring creative ideas to the table. You are supposed to be there to learn so don't be afraid to make mistakes. I always looked for new ideas to contribute and proposed to my manager. As we have limited resources to allocate to projects so that force me to think out of the box in order to make my ideas into reality. Somehow I found that it keeps me passionate in the my job.

3. Lend a hand
It's normal that people do things that only benefit themselves and just don't give a shit if you do not have something to offer. In fact, you have nothing to lose if you offer your assistance. While the saying goes, "Nice guys finish last," you might fear of losing your time, effort or even money, the truth is your act of kindness actually brings opportunity for self-advancement. Not to mention, helping your colleagues shows you're a good team player too. Furthermore, providing assistance to your fellow coworkers can be one of the best, mutually beneficial ways to network. At the end of the day, your boss will notice all of your hard work and your trait of being helpful (which is a plus point).

4. Prioritize
Knowing how to prioritize tasks is vital. You are going to face this when your workload is piled up, everything seems to be urgent, feeling overwhelm and you do not know where to start. The thing is, everybody is going to tell you their task is important but you have to tackle your work by priority. ALWAYS ask for the deadlines of the tasks given and write it down on your notebook/ sticky notes in case you forgot. I always do that so that I managed to hit the deadlines. At the same time, be flexible with changing priorities to be able to prioritize effectively.

5. Welcoming feedback
Being the best isn't about knowing the most. When one believes he knows it all, he is also shutting down himself from learning and improving. Most of the time, we only want to listen to positive feedback because we are humans, we longed to be acknowledged, accepted and appreciated. Negative feedback doesn't necessary mean we are not good, or some people see it as a threat and reacted defensively. It simply means we're not good enough as we are and also reminds us that we have rooms for improvement, we need to change for the better. In fact, receiving feedback is all about managing the emotions stir up in you so that you can take in other's opinion and ideas with an open mind.

6. Take pride in your doings

It's good to be humble but it's totally okay to take pride in what you do after all the hard work and hours you have devoted to the project and finally see it blossom. No matter how trivial your job it is, be proud of yourself that you have accomplished it. It's fine that you talk a little about your accomplishment or things that you have done, this doesn't mean you are boasting about yourself, see it as a sharing instead. I was too shy to share or talk about what I have done until my manager mentioned it to me when I asked her for feedback. But now, I had learned to take ownership in my doings, realize that when I am driven by that, I am more passionate and will bring out the best in me.

Intern in L'Oreal | More than only an internship

17 Sep 2015

Beauty is something that I am always passionate about but never thought I would be working in a beauty company, let alone the prestigious L'Oreal. About half year ago, I was preparing myself to a new chapter of my life. I was excited and sad at the same time, excited that I could be interning in L'Oreal and sad to be leaving home for six months. So, I started the new chapter not knowing what to expect.

This six months was much more than only an internship. It was a learning experience, a wonderful journey to me. I feel as though I have grown up a lot, I noticed somehow there's a change in myself, a positive change towards adulthood which is something I embraced. Now let's not bore you out by giving every single details of how my intern was. Instead, let me share some highlights of my internship.

One of the perks of working in the beauty industry is that you get to attend a lot of events. If you are a social butterfly, you will love it as you get to dolled up, meet new people, mingle around with a couple of drinks. I do enjoy dressing up myself to events but I still feel slightly uncomfortable in socializing with people. Anyway, being only an intern, I think I'm pretty lucky to have the opportunity to attend events and the best part of attending events is that you get to meet amazing people.

With Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir
With Samantha Lee
With Albert Nico during Vlook pampering event.

I am also grateful to have a manager who is willing to empower me in handling projects and events. There are a few events that I was involved from A to Z and I learned how we actually convert a conceptual idea into a reality. Events may seem to be simple but there are a lot of sweat and hardwork behind the success of every events. And I got to say, working is so much different from studying....duhhhh

Vlook pampering at Shawn Cutler with Nicole, Gibson and Hannah
This was at Miko Galere, Pavilion with Hannah, Nicole, Miko(the owner) and Alicia.
Yet, despite all the hardship and challenges, I actually enjoyed every single bit of it. And at the end of the day, when you noticed how successful those events were, the feeling of satisfaction and achievement were priceless.

Above all else, I believe friendship is my biggest takeaway from my internship. I may travel alone from north to south, but I am sure leaving with a few more friends. We started off as colleagues, but along the way, the flower of friendship just blossomed and bloomed. Today, we are more than just colleagues. We are friends. Besides being friends, they are also my mentor and seniors who give me advice, share their experience, give valuable opinions and feedback as well as inspire me. I learned a lot from each of them. And if I have to name one thing I miss the most, that would be the days where I get to work alongside with them, and the nights of chit-chatting.

PPDians! All the lovely people that I met along the journey.

I certainly enjoyed my past six months in L'Oreal. Life is all about making decisions. I am glad I made the decision and it was one of the best decision I have made, being able to meet so many amazing and inspiring people here, as well as having a good place to work where I actually enjoyed. Love ya!

Cerro Qreen Makeup Brushes

30 May 2015

DSC02162

- Thanks Natta Cosme for the set of brushes -

First of all, I have a confession to make - I have mastered the art of applying my makeup with fingers. Well, I'm the kind of person who uses my fingers to put on foundations, concealers, eyeshadow and basically everything that I can apply with my fingers. I always have this theory of applying foundation with fingers create a more natural look and sinks into our skin better as it warms in our fingers.  And most importantly, it's TIME-SAVING!

I used to spend half an hour to makeup to work but now I spent only 15 minutes. Mainly is because I have skipped a few steps, I only apply the basics such as foundations and concealer now. I'm getting lazier and lazier. After all nobody noticed the difference. This is what I call natural beauty! Hahaha. I would rather use the extra 15 minutes to sleep. I can really tell the difference when I have enough sleep.

No matter how much I swear by my fingers to apply foundations, little did I know that how little product I actually need to cover the uneven areas of my face with brushes. Moreover, it becomes so much easier to blend the eyeshadows and it has perfectly keep my undereye concealer from caking and creasing.

Having a makeup brush set has always been in my wishlist even though I hold tight to my theory. #girlsebeinggirls I was lucky enough to receive this Cerro Qreen makeup brush set from Natta Cosme. Once again, thanks so much for these pretty brushes! This 10 pieces brush set is all a girl needs! What makes it better is that they come with a pouch which is really convenient for travelling. There are a few colours but I chose the black one as it looks more professional with black and I'm not too much of a girly-girl.

Powder Brush | Blush Shadow Brush | Foundation Brush
The bristles of powder brush and blush shadow brush are made of goat's hair and they are so soft and fluffy that I feel so gentle when I sweep it across my face whereas the foundation brush is made of fiber. All the brushes' handles made from black matt paint wooden are so good to grip when you're doing your makeup.1
Powder Brush
Use it to apply loose powder or mineral powder after foundation and concealer to set everything in place and keeps my makeup long lasting.

Blush Shadow Blush
This came just in time for my Lancome's blusher that I've just bought during L'Oreal's Luxe warehouse sales that doesn't come with a brush. The slight angle of this brush follows the natural contour of my cheeckbones and also ensure me putting the right amount in the right place which makes the application so delicate.

Foundation Brush
I never know using a foundation brush is the best way to get a flawless looking skin until I tried. This foundation brush allows me to reach the areas that I can barely reach with my fingers and makes my skin looks seamless.

Small Eye Shadow Brush
Eyeshadow brushes come with two sizes and the bristles are made of pony's hair. I use the large eye shadow brush as a base brush and the small one as the blending brush.

Eyebrow Brush
This brush doesn't necessarily for the brows, it is totally versatile. You can use it to apply eyebrows as well as gel eye liner, or even eye shadow to reach the inner corner of the eyes for highlights. It's a brush that you can use for everything.

Fan Brush
Sometimes we tend to have a heavy hand when it comes to applying powder and blusher, this is where fan brush comes into play. I use it to fans away the excess products and blend my blusher to achieve a softer look.

Eyeliner Brush
I don't really use this as I am not using any gel eyeliner but I'm sure you could sketch your eyeliner perfectly and precisely with its fine and stiff bristles.

Eyelash Brush
Use it to comb my eyelashes after applying mascara to blend out the harsh strokes and ensure the hairs are in place. It can also be used on the brows as well.

Lip Brush
I know a lot of us including myself don't use a lip brush because applying lipstick or lip gloss straight from the tube is so much convenient especially when we are in a rush. But do you know that using a lip brush make your application more precise and even. I like this lip brush because it's more hygiene with the cap.

#A tip for you, if you are going to a dinner or event party with a small clutch that cannot fit in too much of things. just load up your lip brush and put in your clutch so that you could touch up without having to bring the lipstick.

I sincerely love all the brushes!
I might not be using all of them in my everyday makeup but it's good to have them, you never know when you are in need of any of the the brushes.
I just love how they are so easily to carry around which makes travelling so convenient.
Most importantly, the brushes are so soft that I don't feel harsh on my skin. I've experience brushes that are really harsh, you won't feel comfortable with it and your makeup wouldn't look as smooth.
They are the basics that every girls need!

Beauty Haul | Beauty Cottage

28 Apr 2015

DSC01179
I stumbled upon this cute, lovely, vintage-style beauty shop while I was shopping in Jungceylon in Phuket. I thought I would just take a look and I could resist myself from buying.. BUT.. I was so wrong!

To be honest, spending money on cosmetics really wasn't my plan.  After all, we were traveling on a budget, I need to spend my money wisely so that I don't have to eat instant noodles for the next 9 days. Plus, it's Phuket, why would you want to buy cosmetics in Phuket?

And then, I saw their eyeshadow selling for only 88 baht. Boom.
*How could I not buy them?*
That's how my beauty haul started and I'm going to share with you guys what I have bought from Beauty Cottage.

I swear. Initially, I only wanted to buy the eyeshadows. Their packaging are way too cute that made me so tempting to bring them home. God knows how long I struggled within myself. That time they were having this promotion which you got a makeup bag if you purchase 900 baht and above. It's so enticing, isn't it? So, I decided to bring them all back. Yay!

I would just save the hassle on introducing Beauty Cottage as I guess most of you have already came across this brand or have tried using their products.

Color Bloom Pearl Shadow
I bought 3 very similar shades so that I could match them easily. They are the colours that I would wear often. I mean, you can never go wrong with brown shades. That's the safest colour to go if you are more conservative with colours.

Defined by Art Auto Eyebrow & Eyeliner
Traveling has become much more convenient with this 2 in 1 eyebrow and eyeliner pencil. I go for the brown one because I want a more natural look. I was amazed by its smudge proof ability, the colour stay as it is and doesn't smudge throughout the day! The texture is soft and creamy that I could glide on my lash lines smoothly. Also, it's very easy to blend it on the brows!

Forever Beauty Highlight & Bronzer
This shimmery bronzer really gives you a pretty highlighted glow. What so cool about this is it's a highight & bronzer duo, you could pick the beige one for the highlight and the darker bronzer to sweep it underneath your cheekbones or you could just swirl it together to get a mix of those. I am not really a fan of the highlighter as it's a little too shimmer to my liking but the bronzer is really pretty.

Seaweed Mineral Facial Spray
Okay, I have to admit that the packaging attracted me into buying it. The bottle is in a very nice sea blue colour, and whenever I see it, I feel serenity. The smell is so good and natural, not too strong and artificial. It would be perfect if the size is smaller so that I could bring it with me everywhere to keep myself fresh!

Sue's Internship Diary #2

21 Mar 2015

Hello guys! It's been almost a month now since my last update. I really feel guilty la, I have been saying I will be more committed in updating my blog for like thousand times but I never keep my words. Especially this year, I feel so bad that I rarely update my blog. Honestly, I was really really busy. (Hey sue, this is an excuse!) Anyway, just gonna update you guys on what I've been so busy about.

I guess most of you know that I have started my internship but I didn't reveal which company is it in my previous blogpost. But I think some of you already knew it since I posted some internship-related photos on my instagram. Yes, I'm so proud to say that I'm the new Intern in L'Oreal. *flips hair* You must be wondering(or not) which brand I'm working with, it's L'Oreal Professionnel. Frankly, before I joined L'oreal, I didn't know the difference of L'oreal Professionnel and L'oreal Paris selling in drugstores. I thought they are the same *I believe a lot of people have the same thoughts too*

In fact, you can only find L'Oreal Professionnel's products in salons. That is why you never see their products in Watson, Guardian or Caring. So, if you want to buy any LP products, visit our authorized salons!

Anyway, I have been working for 3 weeks now and I truly enjoy it. I'm blessed. Initially, my parents were not happy with me coming to this big city alone, but I persuaded them really really hard. This is the path that I decided to take and no matter how tough it is, I will not give up.

Working in beauty industry is fun and exciting! I get to attend various launching events, fashion parties and etc. I was briefed about my job scope and projects that I will get involve in for the next 6 months. It's so exciting! hahha.

Guess what? I attended Harper's Bazaar Fashion Party on my second week of internship! The grandest event of the year. I was really embarrassed as I wasn't prepared for the event, only told on that day itself. I thought of not going to the event but in the end I was convinced by my manager. Anyway, I was glad that I went, a new exposure for myself!
Finger Food!!
*Sorry for the low quality photos*

The event was way too awesome! Met a lot of people too! It was really an eye opening opportunity for me to see how this industry works.

I'm soo tired now. Got to go to bed now!
Stay tune!
